How do I know if I need reading glasses?

Around age 40 the lenses in our eyes begin to lose their elasticity which is what allows us to focus on small close up things. The scientific name for this ‘condition’ is presbyopia and everyone over 40 will experience it sooner or later. You will notice you can’t read the small print, you are holding things farther away so you can see them better, you are getting frequent headaches, experience eyestrain, or your near vision seems blurry.

Presbyopia is different to astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness and it can be easily corrected with reading glasses. Reading glasses are available in different magnifications, strengths or diopters ( 1.00, 1.25, 2.00, 2.25, 2.5, 3.0 etc.) which people tend to wear only for specific tasks or activities.

If you constantly switch your vision from near to far, you might want to try half-frame, half-moon or slim readers. These allow you to look over the lenses of the reading glasses in order to focus on far objects. Half frame styles have less facial coverage, but the same functionality as the full frame readers.

If you need to focus on a near task for an extended period you might prefer the full size reading glasses which look like regular eyeglasses and only have magnification on the lower portion of the lenses.
